SOFIA AJRAM: You wouldn’t think so, but it’s the final words from Dave Eggers’ “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius”. It says, “I only want you to run under with me on this sand like Indians, if you’re going to fucking sleep all day fuck you motherfuckers oh when you’re all sleeping so many sleeping I am somewhere on some stupid rickety scaffolding and I’m trying to get your stupid fucking attention I’ve been trying to show you this, just been trying to show you this- What the fuck does it take to show you motherfuckers, what does it fucking take what do you want how much do you want because I am willing and I’ll stand before you and I’ll raise my arms and give you my chest and throat and wait, and I’ve been so old for so long, for you, for you, I want it fast and right through me- Oh do it, you motherfuckers, do it do it you fuckers finally, finally, finally.”

ML: What’s something that happened the day you took this photo that you really remember well?
SA: On this particular day I wanted to photograph myself and my best friend Sabrina in a makeshift fort, set up to look like a space station, where we would be future girls from the Sixth Planet. We put tin foil in our hair and glitter on our cheeks and Christmas lights up to replicate stars. A wooden giraffe was used as leverage to hold up the blankets. I remember the light in Sabrina’s eyes as the shutter clicked because we were momentarily children again.

ML: What kind of camera did you take it with? Is it your favourite camera?
SA: I took it with my Nikon D80. I love the shift back to analog photography that has been happening over the past few years, but I’m awful with film. I love my D80; she is nothing short of spectacular and is easily my favourite camera. Many photographers have the talent to capture something in a single shot. For me, it takes multiple frames for me to show you our transgression into ruin. Then I reveal the climax of it all in one frame.
