Bruno Zhu is 19 and wishing he could give a better caption every time he needs to introduce himself.
MOSSLESS: Tell us about your childhood, where did you live most of your life?
BRUNO ZHU: I was born and raised in a small town inside Portugal. There’s nothing interesting about my childhood; a huge deal of TV and McDonald’s. Spent my teenage years in a bigger city and now I’m studying in London.
MS: How were you introduced into photography?
BZ: I was introduced to photography during my first year in high school. We had classes revolving around pin-hole camera effects. The results were so bad and abstract that made me look for a decent digital camera and things took off from there.
MS: Do you consider the process of shooting or selection and editing afterwards more important when it comes to your own work?
BZ: I think the best result is when you balance yourself between both things. With the time I grew more interested on photographing certain subjects so therefore we could say I created a small process for myself, but it wouldn’t be anything if I didn’t pay attention to what I would upload afterwards. Presentation is definitely the other half of a visual business and I believe its importance is increased when you take it from a virtual perspective like flickr photostreams or tumblrs, where the viewer can open several windows, creating their own visual experience, but at the same time distorting the order you uploaded your work, which might be of personal significance to the photographer. So I believe in selecting and editing as well as focus and determination on what you’re photographing.
MS: Do you have any projects or plans for the future?
BZ: Besides trying to get a “HTML for Dummies” book so I can finally build my own online space, I’m working on a book with my friend Mengxi Zhang, whose work I’ve been following since I started shooting with film, so I’m quite excited/overwhelmed to be partners in crime with her. There’s no definitive date yet, but we’re aiming to get it done before this summer.
